HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SKIN THIS DECEMBER.
How and Why?
Dry weather can cause flaky dry skin. Through exposure to harsh weather, the skin can tend to look rough, and even break open with much drying as a result of excessive dryness.
How to care for your skin in dry weather is not so challenging. There are basic things to follow.
1. Get an emollient based moisturiser. It has a way of helping to retain water in your skin cell. Go for something organic and safer. Pick Shea Butter instead of mineral oil. Pick cocoa butter instead of silicone based moisturiser
2. Avoid heavy fragrance creams or lotions. Most synthetic fragrance in lotions could help dry your skin. Go for the no-fragrance ones or something mild. You will do well to choose those with natural fragrance though they tend to be more expensive.
3. This is not a time to use that alcohol based cleanser. No time is good to use anything with Denatured alcohol on your skin, but the effect in dry season could be too terrible. Alcohol dries the skin, strips the lipid layer which is protective and exposes your skin to be battered by the hot weather and the sun.
4. You are likely to get a dark dull looking skin if you keep exposing it to the sun without protection. There are natural ingredients that protects your skin from sun damage which we will deal with in subsequent posts.
Reduce your outdoor activity if possible. If the holiday season is hot in the afternoon in the part of the world you live, you may have to schedule most of your activities to mornings or early evenings. If you can't avoid the sun between the hour of 11pm to 3pm, then wear a sunscreen.
5. Don't shower for too long. You will strip your skin of excess oil. Many soap have the disadvantage of stripping your skin of excess oil in the bid to cleanse it. This may cause dry and flaky skin.
6. Do not take hot shower. Yes, it's tempting because the weather is cold in the mornings but hot water has a way of stripping the skin of oil. One way to get one's skin to age faster is to take a regular hot shower everyday for the rest of one's life. Lukewarm water is preferable.
7. Drink and keep drinking water.
8. Take fruits and raw veggies with lots of fluids like water melon, orange, cucumber etc. Your skin will love you for the effort.
9. Now, you need to moisturize twice in a day. Even if you have an oily skin, you need to choose the right kind of moisturisers.
You need to exfoliate your skin with a mild exfoliant this season, just because the weather is harsher. What worked for you during the rainy season/ spring might not work only because the level of moisture in the atmosphere has drastically reduced.
10. You may need a beauty consultant to put you through. It is not ideal to go to the cosmetic shelf and pick anything. Yes, you have been doing it for years now.
