Withering of the Roses
Withering of the Roses (Excerpt from my book: Withering of
the Roses) BY ‘TEJU DURU
When you begin to grow old, the first organ to tell the
world is your skin. It starts to show fine lines and wrinkles. It tells the
person sitting next to you your age. And a times, it lies about it. It tells
them you are in your forties when indeed you have not crossed the threshold of
twenty.
I always like to tell
people while in school that when I’m seventy, I will look thirty-five. (It will
be unto me according to my faith) I say this because I have some secrets, some
of it which I want to share with you.
Beyond the wonderful and beautiful things that can be used
to treat the skin and to slow down aging there are some basic truth one needs
to know. Why do we age? As children, why can’t we just grow, get to the adult
stage and stay there forever?
Adam was the only man created as an adult. He wasn’t aging.
His body did not see what the bible calls corruption. But then, the day he ate
the fruit, aging set in. Aging is a phenomenon, an understandable and
interesting one though.
When people tend to age faster that they expected it begins
to bother them psychologically. It has a way of affecting one’s self-esteem and
the aspect of psychology is what I will address first in this chapter.
The issue of aging and the way it affects the self-esteem is
understandable. With aging, beauty tends to fly away for most people. It’s
compared to the withering of the roses which I have chosen to title this book. Yet,
some age gracefully. Why do some age gracefully and others whither? Why do some
have their strength renewed with the passing years and some see the corruption
in the world? I believe it is in what each side believes which translates into
what they do. Belief will make you do things.
